In short
- Gold trades near ~$4,000/oz — about 29% below the January 2026 all-time high of $5,595 after a spring correction; spot gold was $3,995.80 on 23 October, down 4.1% on the week as Brent crude rose more than 6%, on Investing.com’s daily history. Silver is near ~$54/oz, under half its January 2026 all-time high (~$121) yet still historically elevated.
- Gold/silver ratio is near ~74:1 — up from the ~57–59:1 extreme of early 2026 and above its long-term average of 60–65:1. On spot closes it rose from about 69 on 9 October to about 74 on 23 October, as silver fell harder than gold in both weeks.
- Central banks bought 863 tonnes of gold in 2025 — more than 80% above their 2010–2021 average — and 345 tonnes in the first half of 2026, the lowest first half since 2022 despite the strongest second quarter on record.
- The Fed held through most of 2026 after three late-2025 cuts, then raised its target range a quarter point to 3.75–4.00% on 16 September; it next meets on 27–28 October. On 16 October Reuters reported markets betting that the Fed would wait until December to raise rates again. The 10-year real yield was 2.66% on 23 October, down from 2.92% on 2 October (US Treasury).
- The Silver Institute expects 2026 to be the sixth consecutive year of silver market deficit, forecast at 46.3 Moz after five straight deficit years from 2021 to 2025 that ended with a 40.3 Moz shortfall (World Silver Survey 2026, April 2026).
Before the current numbers, the framework they fit into. Six forces do most of the work, and they sort into two questions: what it costs to hold gold, and who needs to own it.
Two Voices weigh these forces differently. John Reade, a senior market strategist at the World Gold Council — a membership body funded by gold-mining companies — argues that central-bank buying has changed the structure of demand: it sets a floor under the market, while Western investment flows decide how far above that floor the price trades. Lyn Alden starts from fiscal dominance: when government debt limits how high real interest rates can go, she argues, hard assets including gold tend to benefit — though she sizes gold as a diversifier, not a concentrated bet. The Macro Signals dashboard tracks several of these inputs, and the Gold Macro Charts and gold/silver ratio put today's readings in longer context. For a recent example of the central-bank channel read alongside imports, fund holdings and wholesale demand — and why the four cannot be added together — see China’s Gold Imports Are Surging. Who Is Actually Buying?.
